Managing Director – Import & Export Solutions
Elizabeth Carter, MD of Import and Export Solutions, has been working in International Trade for over 30 years. She has worked with numerous companies and dealt with a variety of products and markets and specialises in: Troubleshooting, Military and Civil Aircraft Controls, US re-export controls and Letters of Credit.
In her early career, Elizabeth worked in banking, moved on to an exporter of garden tools followed by an electronics importer and then to several bonded warehouses. She dealt with sales administration, accounts, shipping, import regimes and all related documentation whilst studying international law at evening classes.
Prior to becoming a Graduate Member of the Institute of Export, Elizabeth decided to become self-employed in 1982 offering ‘Shipping Office Services’. She also dabbled in importing silk underwear to sell by mail order and invested in FLIC (Forwarders Local Import Control), a computer link to Birmingham Containerbase for import clearances. In 1990 she started to employ staff and formed a limited company in 1997. She is therefore able to draw upon her own personal experience of running a small business and dealing with all of the challenges this brings, when relating to clients.
Elizabeth has utilised all of this knowledge to deliver solutions to industry that meet the needs of all departments, from the induction of a new employee through to the boardroom where vital decisions are made. Elizabeth is a recognised trainer in this field and works closely with many high profile organisations.
In preparation for amended legislation in 2004, Elizabeth worked with Rolls-Royce to create the first computer-based training courses covering Export Control. She negotiated the intellectual property rights to the software and successfully marketed and sold the solution to industry prior to the idea being developed by Cranfield University. She has also made awareness presentations at Farnborough Air Show and is a regular speaker at the annual Global Trade Conference.
Elizabeth has been an executive member of EGAD (Export Group for Aerospace and Defence) and served on sub-committees with H.M.Revenue & Customs and NGOs drafting out Arms Control Regulations with an emphasis on small weapons and torture equipment. Oxfam’s representative introduced Elizabeth to the political activist / comedian Mark Thomas who made a Channel 4 Despatches programme about After School Clubs – Arms Dealers. Elizabeth assisted with the movement and delivery of the items used in the programme i.e. ‘sting stick’ and ‘stone thrower’. The programme was used to demonstrate loop-holes in the then regulations and enabled The Home Office to change their guidelines on offensive weapons.
Elizabeth is an enthusiastic professional who enjoys a challenge!
