John James Peterson, 60, and Brunella Zuppone, 67, have been charged for their roles in a massive smuggling scheme to get guns and ammunition into South America. More than 24 people have also been arrested in Argentina, Brazil and the US related to scheme.
Homeland Security Investigation officials seized 5,300 firearms and components (many of them AR-15 rifles) as well as 156 handguns, 30,000 rounds of ammunition, 167 explosives, and 15 silencers. $100,000 in cash was also seized in addition to the weapons and ammunition. The plan was for the guns and ammunition to leave Florida, go to Argentina and end up in Brazil.
